Christmas cashback is money back on spending you're going to do anyway. Click through a cashback site before you buy presents, pay for the big food shop with a discounted gift card, and put it all on a card that pays rewards. Do all three and you can realistically get 3-6% of your Christmas spending back. Here's where the best rates are on 3 November 2026, how to time your orders, and a calculator to work out your own number.

Key takeaways

  • Gifts: Scrimpr's rate tracker showed up to 10% at Boots via Quidco and up to 8% at Argos via TopCashback on 3 November 2026. TopCashback also listed up to 10% at John Lewis.
  • Food shop: gift card apps such as Cheddar and JamDoughnut paid 3.5-4.5% at the big supermarkets on 1 November 2026.
  • Posting dates: Royal Mail's last recommended dates are Friday 18 December for 2nd Class and Monday 21 December for 1st Class.
  • Payout timing: cashback usually stays pending until the retailer's returns window closes, so Christmas cashback normally lands in January to March.
  • More of us are spending more: PwC's autumn 2026 survey found 25% of people plan to spend more on Christmas than last year, against 21% who plan to spend less.

How does Christmas cashback work?

Christmas cashback works the same way as cashback at any other time of year: a retailer pays a cashback site a commission for sending you to it, and the site passes most of that commission back to you. The difference at Christmas is volume. You buy more, from more shops, in a few weeks, so small percentages add up.

There are three layers you can combine:

  1. A cashback site (Quidco, TopCashback or Rakuten) pays a percentage when you click through to a retailer and buy online.
  2. A gift card app (Cheddar or JamDoughnut) gives instant cashback when you buy a retailer's gift card and spend it. This is the only realistic way to earn cashback on a supermarket shop.
  3. Your payment card. A cashback or points credit card adds a little more on top, as long as you clear the balance in full.

You can't always use layers 1 and 2 on the same purchase, so treat them as two separate tools: cashback sites for online gifts, gift cards for food and in-store spending.

PwC's Consumer Sentiment Survey for autumn 2026 found that 14% of people had already started their Christmas shopping by mid-August. If you've started, it's not too late to set up cashback for the rest.

"Up to" matters. The headline rate often applies to one category, such as beauty or new customers, while electricals or gift cards earn less. Always open the retailer's page on the cashback site and check the rate for what you're buying.

Rates also move. Both sites run short-term boosts in the run-up to Christmas, which is why it's worth having both installed. Our TopCashback vs Quidco comparison explains the paid tiers and payout speeds.

How do you earn cashback on the Christmas food shop?

Buy a supermarket gift card in a gift card app, then use it at the checkout. Cashback sites almost never pay on groceries, but gift card apps do, and the cashback is paid instantly.

On 1 November 2026, Cheddar listed up to 4.5% at Tesco and 3.5% at Sainsbury's, Asda and Waitrose, while JamDoughnut paid 3.5% at Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons and Iceland. Our JamDoughnut vs Cheddar guide compares fees, cash-out rules and safety in detail.

Gift card apps aren't just for food. Cheddar also listed up to 4.5% at Argos and Boots on 1 November, and the same trick works for coffee, which matters in December. The catch is that you need to buy the card for the exact amount, ideally standing at the till, so you don't leave a balance stranded.

Take Action: Before your big Christmas shop, open both apps and buy the gift card from whichever shows the higher rate that day.

How much Christmas cashback could you earn?

On £400 of online gifts at 4% and a £250 food shop at 3.5%, you'd earn about £24.75, rising to about £28 with 0.5% card cashback on top. Use the calculator to plug in your own spending and rates.

Calculator
How much Christmas cashback could you earn?
  • Gifts bought online£400
  • Christmas food shop (via gift card)£250
  • Cashback site rate4%
  • Gift card app rate3.5%
  • Card cashback on top (0 for debit)0.5%
Christmas cashback£28.00
From cashback sites£16.00
From gift card apps£8.75
From your card£3.25
That's 4.31% of your Christmas spending back.
Estimates only. Cashback site rates are 'up to' figures and often exclude VAT and delivery. Gift card app rates change daily. Card cashback assumes you clear the balance in full.

The biggest lever is the rate on your biggest spend. Moving £400 of gifts from a 4% retailer to a 10% one adds £24 on its own, so it's worth checking whether the same item is sold by a higher-paying shop before you buy.

If Christmas is looking expensive this year, put the numbers into the UK Budget Planner first. Cashback helps at the edges, but a gift budget does more.

When should you order Christmas gifts in 2026?

Order online gifts that need posting by Friday 18 December for 2nd Class delivery, or by Monday 21 December for 1st Class. These are Royal Mail's last recommended posting dates for 2026:

Royal Mail service Last recommended posting date
2nd Class Friday 18 December
Tracked 48 Saturday 19 December
1st Class Monday 21 December
Tracked 24 Monday 21 December
Special Delivery Guaranteed Wednesday 23 December

Royal Mail says these dates may change, and retailers using couriers set their own cut-offs, so check each shop's delivery page too.

There's also a cashback reason to buy earlier. Your cashback normally stays "pending" until the retailer's returns window closes, and many shops extend returns over Christmas into January. A gift bought in late November will usually confirm sooner than one bought on 22 December.

How do you stop Christmas cashback going missing?

Start every purchase from the cashback site, finish it in one go, and keep the confirmation email. Most missing cashback comes from tracking that breaks between the click and the checkout.

  • Empty your basket first, then click through from the cashback site and add items fresh.
  • Don't use discount codes the cashback site hasn't listed. TopCashback's own terms say unapproved codes can void cashback.
  • Use one browser and allow cookies. TopCashback warns that cashback may not track in Safari and recommends Chrome.
  • Note the date. TopCashback asks for missing claims within 100 days of the order, so claim in January, not April.
  • Remember VAT. Many retailers pay cashback on the price excluding VAT and delivery, so 10% on a £60 gift is closer to £5 than £6.

Pay with a credit card for any gift over £100. As our Section 75 vs chargeback guide explains, the card provider shares liability with the retailer if something goes wrong.

Christmas cashback FAQ

Can you get cashback on Christmas shopping?

Yes. Click through a cashback site such as Quidco or TopCashback before you buy online, and you earn a percentage of the price back. On 3 November 2026, rates for big gift retailers ran up to 10%. For supermarkets, use a gift card app instead, which paid 3.5-4.5% at the big chains.

When does Christmas cashback pay out?

Usually between January and March. Cashback tracks within days, but stays pending until the retailer confirms you haven't returned the item, and Christmas returns windows are often extended. Gift card app cashback is the exception: it's paid as soon as you buy the card.

Is there a new member bonus for cashback sites this Christmas?

TopCashback's refer-a-friend offer pays £10 once you earn £10 of approved cashback within 180 days, for sign-ups from 31 October to 9 November 2026. Quidco's referral pays £10 once you have £5 of confirmed cashback. Bonuses change often, so check the terms when you join.

Can you use a cashback site and a gift card at the same time?

Sometimes. Some retailers pay cashback when you pay with their own gift card, but many exclude gift card payments, and buying the gift card itself rarely earns site cashback. Check the retailer's terms on the cashback site before relying on both.

Is cashback from Christmas shopping taxable?

For normal personal shopping, no. HMRC's Statement of Practice 4/97 says ordinary retail customers aren't liable to Income Tax on cashback they receive. It's different if you buy for a business, where cashback reduces the cost of the purchase in your accounts.

The bottom line

Christmas cashback won't pay for Christmas, but on a typical gift and food budget it can realistically return £20-£40 for a few minutes' effort. Join TopCashback and Quidco now, put a gift card app on your phone for the food shop, and order early enough to beat both the posting deadlines and the returns-window delay.
