Premium vs Metal is the question regular travellers ask most about Revolut. The two plans share a lot, and October's price rise widened the gap between them. I've compared both using Revolut's Premium and Metal pages, checked today, so you can see exactly what the extra money buys.

Key takeaways

  • Premium: £8.99 a month or £90 a year. Metal: £16.99 a month or £165 a year for new customers.
  • Metal costs £75 a year more paid upfront, or £96 a year more paid monthly.
  • Travel insurance is the big difference. Premium has none. Metal covers medical, delays, luggage, winter sports and car hire excess.
  • Metal doubles free ATM cash (£800 vs £400) and RevPoints (1 per £2 vs 1 per £4).
  • Savings barely differ: 3.40% vs 3.25% AER (variable), worth about £30 a year on £20,000.

What does Metal's travel insurance cover?

Metal's travel insurance covers emergency medical and dental treatment, flight delays, lost luggage, winter sports, car hire excess and accidental damage. Revolut's plan comparison lists the limits as up to £10 million a year for medical, £3,000 for winter sports, £2,000 for car hire excess, £1,000 for delays and luggage, and £1 million for personal liability.

Key conditions from the Metal page:

  • The trip must be bought with your Revolut account.
  • Cover ends at age 76.
  • Travel to sanctioned countries or against government advice isn't covered.
  • Pre-existing conditions and trip length limits are in the policy documents, so read them in the app before relying on the cover.

If you'd otherwise buy an annual multi-trip policy, get a quote for your own age and destinations and compare it with the £75 difference. That single number often decides the whole question.

Which subscriptions does Metal add?

Metal adds a second tier of subscriptions on top of Premium's, which Revolut values at £2,200 a year in total. The extras include:

  • Financial Times Standard Digital
  • ClassPass (10 credits a month) and WeWork (1 credit a month)
  • MasterClass, The Athletic and Chess.com
  • NordVPN Plus (an upgrade on Premium's Standard) and Tinder Gold

Metal also includes Uber One even if you've had it before. On Premium it's only for new Uber One members, so if you've already used an Uber One trial, Metal is the only way to get it through Revolut short of Ultra.

Revolut changes partners from time to time and each has its own terms. Check the current list in the app.

Is Metal worth the extra £75 a year?

Metal is worth it if travel insurance or the extra subscriptions are worth more than £75 a year to you. For many frequent travellers, the insurance alone gets close.

Here's a simple way to decide:

  1. Do you buy travel insurance now? If yes, and Metal's cover fits your trips, it may replace that cost.
  2. Would you use the FT, ClassPass or MasterClass? Any one of these at full price costs far more than £75 a year.
  3. Have you had Uber One before? If so, only Metal gives it back to you.
  4. Do you take out more than £400 cash a month abroad? Metal doubles the free allowance.

If you answered no to all four, stick with Premium.

RevPoints are a smaller factor. Metal earns twice as many, so here's what that's worth on your spending:

Calculator
What are Metal's RevPoints worth on your spending?
  • Monthly card spending£1,500
  • RevPoints value (% of spend)0.5%
  • Metal yearly cost£165
Cashback a year-£75
Per month£7.50
After the yearly fee of£165
Over 5 years-£375
Assumes 1 RevPoint per £2 on Metal, valued at about 1p each as airline miles. Premium earns 1 per £4 (about 0.25%). Actual value depends on how you redeem.

On £1,500 a month, Metal earns 9,000 RevPoints a year against Premium's 4,500. At around 1p a point, that's an extra £45, which covers more than half the price difference.

Take Action: Tick off the Metal perks you'd genuinely use and put a price on each. If the total is above £75, Metal may suit you. If not, Premium is the better deal.

How did the October 2026 price rise change things?

Metal had the biggest rise of any plan, so the gap between Premium and Metal grew. Metal went from £14.99 to £16.99 a month (£140 to £165 a year), and Premium from £7.99 to £8.99 (£80 to £90), according to DepositScout's analysis of Revolut's fees page.

Old gap New gap
Monthly billing £84 a year £96 a year
Annual billing £60 a year £75 a year

New customers have paid the new prices since 14 October. Existing customers move to them on 19 December 2026.

If you're already on Metal

If you rarely use the insurance or the extra subscriptions, the price rise is a good moment to consider Premium. Ask in-app chat about downgrading before 19 December. Metal is a 12-month plan, so a break fee may apply if you pay monthly, but if you don't accept a notified price change, Revolut's Paid Plan Terms let you close your account free before it takes effect. A free downgrade is at Revolut's discretion. Annual payers keep their price until renewal.

If you're already on Premium

If you've got trips booked for 2027 and you'd otherwise buy insurance, upgrading to Metal before you book means the trips can be paid for with Revolut and covered.

Who should choose Premium and who should choose Metal?

FAQ

What is the difference between Revolut Premium and Metal?

Revolut Metal costs £16.99 a month against Premium's £8.99. Metal adds travel insurance, more subscriptions including the Financial Times and ClassPass, £800 of free ATM cash instead of £400, 1 RevPoint per £2 instead of £4, 40% off transfers instead of 20%, and Uber One even if you've had it before.

Is Revolut Metal worth it over Premium?

Revolut Metal is worth it if you'd use its travel insurance or the extra subscriptions, because it costs £75 a year more than Premium on annual billing. For people who travel once or twice a year and have insurance elsewhere, Premium gives most of the value for less.

Does Revolut Premium include travel insurance?

No. Revolut Premium doesn't include travel insurance. It has purchase protection up to £2,500 a year, extended refunds and ticket cover. Travel insurance starts on Metal, which covers medical costs, delays, luggage, winter sports and car hire excess on trips bought with Revolut.

Can I upgrade from Revolut Premium to Metal?

Yes. You can upgrade from Premium to Metal at any time in the Revolut app, and Metal's benefits apply from the date the change takes effect. To be covered by Metal's travel insurance, pay for your trip with your Revolut account after you've upgraded.

Do Revolut Premium and Metal have the same savings rate?

No. Revolut Premium pays 3.25% AER (variable) and Metal pays 3.40%, as checked on 5 November 2026. On £20,000 the difference is about £30 a year, so it's rarely a reason to choose Metal on its own. Both are FSCS protected up to £120,000.

The bottom line

Premium is the better value for most people. Metal earns its extra £75 a year if you travel regularly and would otherwise pay for insurance, or you'd use the FT, ClassPass or MasterClass. If neither applies, stick with Premium.
